Dance, Acting, and Music (Classical, Historical Performance) Divisions

The Hector School Dance Division will offer a three-year conservatory program leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

  • The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance is a full four-year program of study and includes a Liberal Arts Curriculum.

The application and audition process will be identical for all applicants. The Dance Division will accept 24 students per year (12 women and 12 men) from the entire applicant pool, and will not distinguish between BFA, Diploma, Transfer, and Early Admissions applicants in the audition process.

Please note: Double majors will be very rare at Hector, due to the strenuous nature of the performance-based curriculum.  It will only be possible to double major if both majors are within Classical Music; it will not be possible to combine divisions (for example, Dance and Music).

Programs and Eligibility for Acting Applicants

The Hector School Drama Division’s Actor Training Program offers a three-year conservatory program leading to one of the following:

  • a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with Liberal Arts requirements) for students who have not previously completed a bachelor's degree; or
  • a Master of Fine Arts degree for students who will have earned a bachelor's degree prior to enrolling at Hector.

The application and audition process will be identical for all applicants, regardless of degree level. Each year, the Actor Training Program will accept a total of 18 students for all degree levels. This group of 18 actors will be comprised of 8-10 undergraduates and 8-10 graduates, who will work through the four-year acting curriculum together as a group. Liberal Arts and other selected courses will be taken separately by degree level.

Please note: Double majors will be very rare at Hector, due to the strenuous nature of the performance-based curriculum.  It is only possible to double major if both majors are within Classical Music; it will not be possible to combine divisions (for example, Drama and Music).

Program Eligibility

  1. Hector Playwrights Program will offer one-year, tuition-free, graduate-level fellowships to four or five writers.
  2. Selected playwrights may be invited to continue their studies through a second academic year, thereby completing a total of 52 credits for the two-year fellowship period and earning an Artist Diploma in Playwriting.
  3. All applicants must submit an application and one full-length play by the deadline.  Late applications may be accepted at the discretion of the Drama Division and Office of Admissions.
  4. It is preferred that applicants hold an undergraduate degree; however, applicants with advanced training equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or exceptional artistic accomplishment will also be considered.
  5. Proof of English language proficiency will be required from applicants whose first language is not English.  Please note, play submissions must be in English.
Jazz Studies

One of the most exciting and innovative jazz programs in the country, Hector Jazz Studies will combine education in the history and traditions of the music with unparalleled professional performance opportunities designed to integrate students into a thriving jazz environment.

As a jazz student at Hector School of Arts, you will work closely with our dedicated faculty members and enjoy numerous performance opportunities as a member of the Hector Jazz Orchestra and smaller ensembles. In addition to performances at Hector and Kiepie Moeketsi Hall, the Hector Jazz Orchestra and Hector Jazz Ensembles will regularly perform at prominent venues and festivals. Students will also gain valuable interactive performance experience by participating in one of Hector’s educational or community outreach programs.

We will offer majors in Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Saxophone, Trombone, and Trumpet in the following degree programs:

  1. Bachelor of Music and Undergraduate Diploma, Jazz
  2. Master of Music and Graduate Diploma, Jazz
  3. Artist Diploma in Jazz Studies
